چکیده

This module discusses the two major topics of Simpson’s paradox and the Supreme Court decision in McCleskey v. Kemp (1987). Simpson’s paradox is ubiquitous in the misinterpretation of data; it is said to be present whenever a relationship that appears to exist at an aggregated level disappears or reverses when disaggregated and viewed within levels. A common mechanism for displaying data that manifests such a reversal phenomenon is through a multiway contingency table, often of the 2× 2× 2 variety. For example, much of the evidence discussed in McCleskey v. Kemp was cross-categorized by three dichotomous variables: race of the victim (black or white), race of the defendant (black or white), and whether the death penalty was imposed (yes or no). Despite incontrovertible evidence that the race of the victim plays a significant role in whether the death penalty is imposed, the holding in McClesky v. Kemp was as follows: Despite statistical evidence of a profound racial disparity in application of the death penalty, such evidence is insufficient to invalidate defendant’s death sentence.

How Likely is Simpson’s Paradox?

What proportion of all 2× 2× 2 contingency tables exhibit Simpson’s Paradox? An approximate answer is obtained for large sample sizes and extended to 2×2×l tables. Several conditional probabilities of the occurrence of Simpson’s Paradox are also derived. Given that the observed cell frequencies satisfy a Simpson reversal, the posterior probability that the population parameters satisfy the same...

3 Algebraic geometry of 2 × 2 contingency tables

Contingency tables represent the joint distribution of categorical variables. In this chapter we use modern algebraic geometry to update the geometric representation of 2 × 2 contingency tables first explored in (Fienberg 1968) and (Fienberg and Gilbert 1970). Then we use this geometry for a series of new ends including various characterizations of the joint distribution in terms of combination...

Partial Association Components in Multi-way Contingency Tables and Their Statistiical Analysis

In analyses of contingency tables made up of categorical variables, the study of relationship between the variables is usually the major objective. So far, many association measures and association models have been used to measure  the association structure present in the table. Although the association measures merely determine the degree of strength of association between the study varia...

Paradoxes in multidimensional contingency tables: What does this mean for CFA?

Lienert (1969, 1971a) justified his invention of Configural Frequency Analysis (CFA) by the observation that higher-order interactions may exist in threeand higher-dimensional data even if no correlations between any pairs of variables can be observed. In Lienert (1971b) Hierarchical CFA (HCFA) was proposed in order to find that subset of variables which shows the highest degree of interdepende...

Empirical Analysis and the Fate of Capital Punishment
